Livestock DM Required Per Day Calculator

The tool below calculates the weight of dry matter each head of livestock should consume daily based on their body weight.

Understanding Daily DM Intake Percentage: The daily DM intake percentage varies and is influenced by factors such as livestock type, age energy requirements determined by the animal’s activity and performance level, and environmental conditions. Typically, livestock consume between 2% to 3.5% of their body weight in DM per day. For instance, if you have cattle that weigh 500 Kg on average, and they consume 2.5% of their body weight in feed, the DM intake per head per day would be 12.5 Kg. Note on Forage Quality: It’s worth mentioning that the quality of forage can affect the amount of DM intake. Higher quality forage with more nutrients can lead to lower overall DM intake percentages as the nutritional needs of the livestock are met more efficiently.
